Synopsis

A fictionalized version of true events that the Illustrator, Paula Duffy, experienced growing up on her father's coffee farm in Brazil. Paulinha is the, the main character. Her father, Mr. Barrotti remarries after his wife dies. The new stepmother, Aneti, is not whom she portrays to be. She is jealous and makes Paulinha life into a living hell. Aneti tells Paulinha not to tell her father or he will get sick and die. Paulinha does not want to lose her only birth parent. She suffers her torment and Aneti loves to see her suffer. The maids and cooks observe what Aneti does to Paulinha but Aneti has threated them not to tell Mr. Barrotti. Paulinha plays under the old Figueira tree that grows on the farm. One day the Lady's face appears on the bark of the tree and she speaks. Paulinha finds solace talking to the Lady. The day finally comes when Paulinha tells the Lady what Aneti has been doing to her. The Lady councils Paulinha what to do. The final clash occurs close to the Figueira tree. Aneti, Paulinha's father, the farm workers, maids and cooks along with Paulinha's friends and her animals. The stepmother lies but no one believes her and the maids, cooks and workers speak up stating what they have observed. Mr. Barrotti listens intently and makes his decision.
