Synopsis

The Pink Velvet Anthology is a representation of the maturing process of young womanhood. Seven chapters deep of non-fiction narratives including stories of sexual violence, healing, heart break, and spirituality. I cover many different topics from many different angles and I write about some of the things that my mentors & mother figures taught me and young ages. I find myself willing to pass that wisdom forward.

Nia N. Johnson is a youth activist, writer, and spoken word artist from Hampton, VA. She began writing poetry in elementary school performing for churches and youth conferences across the Hampton Roads Area. She entered Slam poetry in 2015, as a member of Teens with A Purpose, a non-profit youth development organization that empowers young people to use their voices and actions in positive ways to engender change in their communities. Since her debut to the poetry scene, she won the 1619 Making of America: Poetry Competition in 2012, Life Giver and Leadership Award in 2016 from Calvary Revival Church Peninsula, Named Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate Ambassador 2016-2017/2017-2018. She has graced the stage of Brave New Voices International Poetry Competition 2015, 2016, and 2017 as a member of the Hampton Roads Youth Poetry Team. In 2016, The team took the world by storm as the 2nd place champions. Nia Graduated Advanced from Nansemond River High School as an active member in FBLA Vice President, Social Justice Club, Lady Warrior Varsity Basketball and Founder of "The Bold" A faith Based Club for students. Nia was also the Relay for Life Youth Ambassador in Suffolk VA, and was Crowned Miss ODU Youth NAACP 2016! Currently, she is a Sophomore at Radford University as a Fashion Merchandising, Business Marketing Double Major and performs for the university and its many organizations monthly. She's Also performed for other Universities such as Hampton University, Norfolk State University, And Virginia Tech University. Her consistent message through all forms of her work is "to empower others to live a shameless, organic, and purposeful life."
