Synopsis

Reme recounts her memories of World War II in the Philippines from a young mother’s perspective. The birth of a first child should have been a joyous occasion for both parents. Instead, Japanese planes bombed Manila, and Reme’s husband, away in the military for almost nine months, was unaware of his newborn son. An escape across the bay to safety in Pangil proved daring and difficult with an infant. When the Japanese Army invaded the peace there, Reme faced a risky return to a bombed-out home in Manila. She endured those quests with resilience and hope. Rebuilding her life as an immigrant in the United States a few years later may have been Reme’s greatest challenge.

Reme Pick is a member of the California Writers Club Tri-Valley Branch. Her essays and stories have been published in Kaleidoscope XXI anthology, TVW branch anthologies, the City of Oakland Senior Center Anthology, and in collections such as Written Across the Genres and Captivate Audiences to Create Loyal Fans. People and locations from the past and present pique her imagination. She never experiences writer’s block. Born in 1922, Reme is an active senior citizen. Local residents greet her on her six-mile daily walks. She works out at the gym or swimming pool after she returns and then helps fellow seniors learn strategies to play Mahjong, a game of skill, intelligence, calculation, and luck using 152 tiles among four players. Frequently she leads Mahjong competitions between neighboring retirement communities. She likes to garden and has several flourishing plants on her apartment balcony. Reme was married, widowed and remarried in the Philippines and had two sons before their move to California. Her daughter was born in in the United States. She enjoys family gatherings with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who delight in her cooking especially when she makes adobo and lumpia.
