In Matthew Michael Hanner’s new book, août, France is the horse that carries us through his landscapes of thirty-one photographs and related poems. Postcards were made from his photographs of France and then the poems written using the photographs as prompts. Some came easy, Hanner said, while others required a Cesarean birth. The poems were written for the August, 2017 annual exchange of poems on postal cards – organized by Seattle poet, Paul Nelson. Hanner’s original cards were sent to thirty-one other participating poets that August. They appear in chronological order.
