Synopsis

Concussions are a part of ALL sports and it may shock you to know that a majority of concussions occur in equestrian events! Polo, rodeos and horse jumping all involve very large and unpredictable animals that weigh thousands of pounds. This unpredictability leads to a variety of injuries from broken bones to even death! In this special equestrian edition of Head Games: Concussions & CTE, Where Do We Go From Here?, the precautions that riders need to take are laid out. While equestrian events are elegant and beautiful, they can also be dangerous. Some of the precautions I cover include the different concussion assessment tools available, the importance of getting baseline assessments, protective gear, training young riders "how to fall" properly and ways to optimize your brain health through nutrition. This provides the rider with every layer of protection if an unfortunate fall takes place. We have to get the message out there that concussions are serious business and need to be treated as such. More information can also be found in my free webclass at concussionclass.com

À propos de l'auteur

Dr. John DeWitt was raised on a farm in Bonanza, Arkansas, where his father not only had a thoroughbred racehorse, but the family also enjoyed the company of a palomino named Pete as well as two Shetland Ponies (Salt and Pepper, who would bite at any and every opportunity). The DeWitts raised over 200 head of cattle, a flock of chickens, in addition to a passel of hogs and grew strawberries, peaches as well as pecans. Beginning riding at the age of five, Dr. DeWitt fell in love with horses, though didn’t experience his first riding injury first-hand until a trip to Silver Dollar City. Riding as a child in front of his dad, his father decided to take a flash photo during a trail ride. To this day, he can feel the warm air blowing past his face as the ground quickly approached. Although relatively unscathed by his first buck off a horse, he continued to ride horses near Fayetteville, Arkansas and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having pastime experience in jumping horses as well as equine games on trips to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Dr. DeWitt has seen (and escaped) from dangerous equine situations. In this special equestrian edition of Head Games, he has used his experience to share thoughtful and healthy tips about safety before getting in the saddle and what to do when you experience an unplanned emergency dismount.
