Fifteen-year-old James “Skinner” O’Brien has one dream in life. He wants a farm of his own in the lush San Joaquin Valley of California. He hopes his best friend, Sordi, will be his neighbor and that the amazing Sarah Jane will be something more.
Before Skinner can come close to reaching his dream, he’ll have to survive his adolescence! The year is 1920, and the streets of the rough town of Butte, Montana, are no place for the weak. Skinner, determined to help his impoverished family make a little more money and save up for a down payment on a farm, begins to sell newspapers. Plenty of other boys are doing the same thing, and Skinner will soon realize that the newspaper business is a lot more dangerous than people might think.
As the wily young man dodges rival newsboys, gang members, and a sadistic sixteen-year-old, he will discover the truth about his abilities and find a new dream worth cherishing. At his side are the loyal Sordi, the beautiful Sarah Jane, the kindly Mrs. Camp, and bona fide Cherokee spirits willing to help in any way they can. Will Skinner rise above Butte before the town can beat him down?
