Synopsis

These easy-to-implement activities engage young children as they identify things in their natural environment and the man-made environment, explore different types of maps, and construct a variety of maps to answer the compelling question, “What is my place in the world?” A rich variety of children’s literature, including informational text, helps them learn the geography content and increase their spatial understanding of their environment. The World Around Me integrates a comprehensive variety of Common Core State Standards for reading and language arts. One of the best ways to engage young children is by involving them in projects. Activities in this unit utilize the Dimensions of the C3 Framework’s Inquiry Arc as teachers are encouraged to serve as facilitators in inquiry-based lessons. If Chromebooks or I-Pads are available, students use Google Earth to explore the world as they create and seek to answer their own questions.
