Readers will have a first-hand view of the beginning of oil exploration in Central and South America and see how the Cortez Oil Company for whom Bill Power worked, as well as other American and European companies, began the destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest.Using untouched photographs and memorabilia from Mr. Power’s personal effects, the reader will be able to walk alongside him from his youth to the year’s following the journey into the most mysterious and unexplored region in the Americas where dangers lurked behind every tree and bush, and hostile blow gun wielding natives cautiously monitored the team’s movements.The pages of the text present true and actual events but the story goes beyond the facts showing the reader the wonders of the Amazon as seen by a young adventurer.

Across Peruvian Deserts, Over the Andes, and Down the Amazon: A Personal Account of Oil Exploration in the Early 20th Century is the first published work written by Jack Power, the grandson of William Hammon Power whose tales of wondrous adventure were the inspiration for the book. A teacher for over 40 years, the author taught language arts and drama at North East High School in Pennsylvania and Advanced Placement Language and Composition at Pawling High School in New York. Mr. Power’s recent retirement from teaching has allowed him the opportunity to explore and share the stories of his grandfather’s life and journey through the Amazon rainforest. The author, also an acclaimed distance running coach, is currently working on a book about coaching high school cross country. He also plans to tell the tales of his youth and the remembrances of vacations to the hill country of Tennessee where his mother’s family originated. Mr. Power currently resides in Pawling, New York with his wife and his two youngest children.
