When the Sap Rises, is a literary tale about a young black girl, Mae Mose, growing up in Williamsburg County, South Carolina during the Sap Season or the first five weeks of spring, 1916, At eight years old, Mae is a handful. She is a first generation born free, Black. She is full of questions and energy. Her uncle, George (Ben) Dunmore, an “Old Head” or ex-slave has been thrust into the role of baby-sitter. Mae shadows him and watches as he navigates through treacherous times such as racism, domestic violence, and death. She learns how to deal with people and turn bad situations into good. He is illiterate but has much common sense and references everything to how sap rises in trees.

“People can be like these trees,” he replied.

“What do you mean by that?” the little girl asked.

“You see as the temperature gets hotter these trees will swell with sap and any crack or cut into its bark and the sap will leak out. The sap starts off sweet but as the temperature rises it turns bitter. And, just like these trees, people start out good but as the temperature rises they fill with frustration and all the good inside them turns bitter and any little jab or puncture will cause what’s on the inside to come out. That is why I said what I said.”

“Are people going to swell and change?” the little girl asked.

“ Unfortunately, they will. It never fails." he answered.

Around this country, there is an old prophecy that says, “When the trees cry it is a dangerous time and too much of a good thing is a bad thing.” It is the beginning of the Sap Season and the trees have begun to cry, badly. What lies ahead for these two?
