Thirteen year old Josh has been relocated with his all-but-absent father to his picky aunt’s home (no internet)! Yet, it is near a renowned hospital that might be the place to help his critically ill mom. Reacting to the theft of his bike, Josh is wrongly blamed for a broken window (and considered quite the troubled youth). He must work for what remains of the summer at an antique store to pay for the window. Within the messy and near bankrupt store, Josh discovers a discarded, ancient piece of automata; a mysteriously well designed mechanical dog that "speaks" to Josh. Reacting to the Mechanical Dog's wish to become real, Josh joins in the unusual creature's attempts to learn the secret that only real dogs know. This leads them into an unforgettable adventure and to an understanding of the origin of the amazing (and extremely valuable) mechanical dog.
