Synopsis

Humans have always looked to the skies with longing and wonder, and tried to understand what is above us. We imagined gods up there somewhere, in a domain of eternal life, comfort and wisdom. But it took many millennia before we reached some understanding of the realms beyond Earth. We found an immense emptiness containing untold stars and planets, clumped in vast galaxies separated by unimaginable distances. All the stars we can see are but a miniscule fraction of space around us. We are overwhelmed by the immensity of it all, but not intimidated; we will keep on striving to understand it as our knowledge of the cosmos improves and our technology advances. We have already left our home planet and begun to visit our neighbor-hood: the solar system. The lecturer tells us that later we will colonize and transform our Moon and Mars, making them into humanity’s homes away from home. Then we will harness zero-point energy, and become real space-farers; it will literally let us reach for the stars at near-luminar velocity. When we find no other life within our reach, we will begin to feel alone, devoid of the company of other intelligences and lost in an unfathomable immensity. Then, once more, our search for understanding will be renewed by an unforeseen discovery. As we survey our neighborhood we will come upon a space-distortion phenomenon that does not fit with our understanding of the universe: wormholes. They will still be beyond our understanding in 9000 CE, but the lecturer tells us of his expedition to find and investigate wormholes. He speculates that they may be traces of superior beings, alien “others,” who already know of our presence. This new mystery will revitalize our search for understanding and revive our hopes. We will start to pursue new goals: to expand our reach and to establish contact with this alien civilization. We are told that in the year 9000 CE humanity stands on the brink of exploration efforts in search of beings who may inform us, guide us and be our companions on our journey to understanding: to our ultimate eschatological goal.
