Synopsis
In that long sequence of adjustments we call “coming of age” or “finding ourselves,” there comes a time, curiously the third time, when women, at about age thirty-five, realize that their lives are not what they intended, not what they intended at all. . They have done with childhood and the directions of their fathers. They have done with boyfriends and brothers. And now they have done with their husbands and their bosses and the church. They are the most volatile domestic force in our culture, metaphorical tempests in a cheap hall of mirrors, the daughters and sisters who are finally aware that they have been trapped in the sticky substance of the curse of the Hebrew god.CC Clarke is thirty five years old, a fighter with her eyes closed, and one arm tied behind her back, a former English professor, suffering from a crippling loss of memory. She lives in hope that some day, one day, one fine day, she will be able to live her own life, not the one made of scraps and patches provided by her husband and friends. That day arrives on a Saturday afternoon in October, at a football game.
