Ray Staszko’s novels in general, and this one in particular, should come with an advisory that readers will likely either love them or hate them. There is little room for middle ground. If you a hard line conservative Roman Catholic, or a born again Evangelical American Protestant, enter these novellas at your peril. This is probably not going to be your cup of tea or chalice of altar wine, to put it mildly. However, to dismiss the works as nothing but below-the-chastity-belt satire would be to fail to take away something from them that is both positive and in its own way inspirational. Ray’s “theology” is one of taking a sledge hammer to False Gods so that the decks can be cleared of their harmful and misleading influences, thereby perhaps leaving the path a little bit clearer for that which is meaningful and true. However, if you think you are about to be treated to a dry presentation on theology, hold on to your Easter bonnet. Ray is first and foremost a storyteller, a creator of characters and of worlds. This set consists of two novellas. In one the leading character is a dead infant whose soul was relegated to Limbo. In the other the narrator is Lucifer, none other than Satan himself. However, they are both characters in the true sense. The worlds they inhabit here and the deeds in which they become engaged are not intended to be taken overly seriously – or perhaps the better word is “literally”. They are presented to whet your imagination and to inspire critical thought about what is real, or might be real, and what is almost certainly not. Ray does not believe that the New Testament, which was likely written generations after the death of the historical Jesus, can be taken as an accurate record of what he actually said and did. However, a quotation he finds telling may be loosely translated, depending upon which version of the book you read, as an admonition from Jesus that he would prefer you to be hot or cold (passionately for or against him), but that if you are lukewarm he will spit you from his mouth. Ray takes him at “his” word on that: and here you find him cold as ice. However, he would propose a similar exhortation for his readers here: be red hot or be stone cold to this book. Post reviews praising it or trashing it. Urge everyone to read it or demand that it be pulled from publication as offensive heresy. Take a stand, make up your own mind, and see where it leads you. Ray believes that if there is a God who gave us these minds of ours, he certainly intended for us to use them.
