Vladimir Frumkin is a renowned musicologist, publicist and journalist now living in McLean, Virginia. While the Soviet Union still stood, he began studying the unofficial singer-songwriter (“bard”) movement that had emerged soon after the death of Stalin. In the first part of his book Singers and Rulers, Mr. Frumkin ponders the relationship between art and power in totalitarian states, as well as the influence that “official” songs exert on the minds of the public. The second part examines the genre of uncensored, independent bard song. Mr. Frumkin’s recollections of the classics and pioneers of the genre, Alexander Galich and Bulat Okudzhava both of whom he knew personally, are interspersed with interviews of great Russian bards: Alexander Gorodnitsky, Yuliy Kim, Tatyana and Sergey Nikitin, as well as theater director Mark Rozovsky.
