Stressed by the crime and political turmoil of Apartheid South Africa, Anna Freeman, young and single, moves to Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1992.
Two years later, Anna’s sister, Rebecca, begs her to come to Johannesburg to take part in the historic 1994 elections. Reluctant at first, Anna arrives but for a different reason: Rebecca’s shocking death.
Now Anna must confront her own heartbreak and that of Rebecca’s five-year-old daughter, Maya. It soon becomes clear that Maya’s devastated father is incapable of parenting the child. Anna decides to take her back, temporarily, to Tel Aviv. Raising a grieving child proves to be an enormous challenge.
Searching for Angels is a story about strength in the face of grief and chaos. Anna struggles to stay afloat in a sea of external hazards, and must also withstand the tumult within: bitter heartache, memories of her own complicated past, and conflicting desires for two very different men. With the help of her compassionate therapist, she draws the unexpected strength to cope.
