Dr. Frank Mattiace is the Executive Director of New Pathway Counseling. He is also the Director of the Employee Assistance Program for the City of Jersey City. Dr. Frank has vast experience in the treatment of addiction and it is his life’s passion to create the most effective treatment for addictive disorders.
A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross where he earned All American Honors in Football, Dr. Frank was a professional athlete from 1983-1987. He began his career as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers and went on to play with the New Jersey Generals of The United States Football League. His playing days ended in 1987 with the Detroit Lions.
When his dream of playing pro football ended, Dr. Frank’s personal struggle with drugs and alcohol increased. Gradually addiction consumed him. He tried to manage it on his own without success. Spiritually and emotionally defeated, he turned to his wife and family, who insisted, “get professional help or leave.” He listened, went to rehab and began his journey into recovery.
While serving as a graduate assistant at Montclair State University, he earned his master’s degree in counseling with an emphasis in addictive disorders. Frank has always had a passion for coaching and his work led him to being named the head coach and general manager of the New Jersey Red Dogs of the Arena Football League.
Always working towards his aspirations, Frank set his athletic passions aside to complete a lifelong goal. In 2004, he earned his doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Southern California for Professional Studies, Santa Clara, CA. From that moment, he decided to dedicate his studies and research to coaching in Life’s Arena.
While working on programs for professional athletes in the NFL, Dr. Frank began to integrate meditation, mental imagery and exercise in counseling addictive and mental health disorders. During a pilot study working with adolescents integrating mindfulness, exercise and 12-step therapies, SOARFIT was created. Dr. Frank realized his program increased clients’ awareness and developed a state of mind best suited to optimize body and brain function.
Dr. Frank Mattiace's own life is a testament to the success of the SOARFIT program. As an athlete, coach and counselor who has battled back from addiction, he is uniquely qualified to guide others through the recovery process to achieve reintegration of the body, mind and spirit.
