After hearing his request, the library director disappeared into the building’s archives and returned carrying a worn and frayed volume bearing the distinctive insignia of the 103d Infantry Division—a green cactus against a blue field and yellow sky.

The book was Report After Action: The Story of the 103d Infantry Division, originally produced after the war by newspaper reporters and 103d Division members Ralph Mueller and Jerry Turk.

That remarkable discovery became the foundation for the story you are about to read.
