Synopsis
Heil Hitler, Herr Göd is the first of a two-part novel based on the true-life memoirs of the author’s grandfather. The author brilliantly weaves the collection of short stories and experiences left behind by his grandfather into one contiguous story that takes place over a handful of days towards the end of Nazi occupation in Austria. Front cover cures outward a bit. Andreas Peter Hofleitner was born in Wiesen, Austria in 1985. On July 4th, 1999 he left his country of birth with his parents and moved to the United States of America, eventually settling in Annapolis, Maryland. In 2010 he graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy. The following six years he deployed three times in support of counter-terrorism operations across the globe. In 2012, on his very first deployment, his grandfather, Erich Hofleitner, passed away in Austria. Andreas would not learn of his passing until months later when he returned home from his deployment. In 2013 Andreas set out to make his grandfather's last wish come true and began translating the memoirs he had left behind for his children and grandchildren. In 2016, after he left active duty service, he selected some of his grandfather's stories and weaved them into the first of a two-series novel. Andreas is currently finishing his Masters in International Business at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford, Massachusetts. Erich 'Richerl' Hofleitner (1939-2012) was a farmer most of his adult life. During World War II he lived in Austria with relatives. He would often share his experiences during this time with his three children and grandchildren. In 2006, upon the request of his children, he began recording these and many other stories in his memoirs, finishing the 624 page manuscript in 2012, only weeks before he passed away. Erich always dreamt of working in film and theater, so it was no surprise that his memoirs were written as a playwright. His last wish was that his stories would live on. In 2013 his grandson Andreas began translating his grandfather's memoirs into English and subsequently chose a few stories to work into a two-part novel.
