Describing a woman as defiant can generate an unsettling response. Some aren’t comfortable with women, especially women of faith, being defiant. Discomfort, however, is not necessarily a bad thing. Growth often stems from our places of discomfort. I would argue that defiance is not a dirty word from which women should disassociate. In some respects, defiance is the only appropriate response for women who are determined to live authentic and free in a world that is designed to keep women in a certain place. A little defiant faith is a requirement for women seeking to live the abundant, authentic lives Jesus afforded us.”

Dr. Vanetta Rather is a preacher, teacher, author, and a fierce advocate for women and girls. She is the founder of My Sister My Seed, Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit with a mission to “Create a safer and a more just world for women and girls.” Born in Newport News, Virginia, and raised in the inner city of southeast Washington, DC, Dr. Rather knows what it’s like to experience both love and lack. She is proud of the roots from which she hails, as they have helped give her the self-determination to persevere and pursue purpose with passion. Her desire to live her purpose and to help others do the same is a direct reflection of the family and community in which she was raised. Dr. Rather graduated magna cum laude from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Science in Human Service. She went on to earn a Master of Divinity and later a Doctor of Ministry with a concentration in preaching in the twenty-first century from the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. She is very passionate about preaching, and she uses her passion to spread an empowering message of self-love, self-worth, and value to all, especially women and girls who are too often marginalized, left out, and left behind. Her work speaks for itself and has garnered Dr. Rather awards and acknowledgements including the Eboné Image Award from the National Coalition of One Hundred Black Women, Inc., as well as an acknowledgment from the former lieutenant governor of the state of Maryland, Anthony G. Brown. Dr. Rather penned All the Single Ladies: Modern Single & Faithful, a book that encourages and seeks to remind women that they can embrace this modern culture and remain committed to an ageless faith. Dr. Rather desires women of faith to break the bonds of cultural and faith traditions that hinder women and keep them from the abundant life God called them to live. Using her advocacy work and her skills as a homiletician, Dr. Rather is extremely grateful and honored to fulfill her life’s mission to build the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.
