About "Cups and Their Customs”

The Londoners Henry Porter and George Roberts were not too fond of modern American drinking culture; too strong in alcohol, too sweet, too cold and, above all, far too big for their British palates were these "cocktails" that were increasingly spilling over into Europe from the other side of the Atlantic. In their opinion, they were "sensational drinks" that were not destined for a long life. So there were plenty of reasons to write a rebuttal to the emerging trend, praising the good old "cups" and hopefully saving them from extinction.

The authors Porter and Roberts tell a heart-warming and poetic story about the origins of the cups, whose history goes back to Roman times. In addition to historical digressions and even poems, the book also contains some recipes for handpicked concoctions. The authors claim that the latter have been chosen with the utmost care, as they not only have a special historical significance, but are also considered to be extraordinarily tasty.

Ultimately, Henry Porter and George Roberts may have failed to shield British drinking culture from New World influences, but the book was a success at the time of its publication and went into two editions. With their work, they have also created a time capsule that offers insights into the drinking habits of mid-19th century Britain.

What are "cups"?

Cups are usually prepared in larger quantities, such as bowls or dishes, and served in (often richly decorated and expensive) mugs. The ingredients often include wine, beer, various spirits, water, honey, spices and fruit. It is not uncommon for cups to be prepared hot, which reveals their special proximity to punch.

About this edition

Books such as "Cups and Their Customs" were published in far smaller numbers than, for example, their famous counterparts from the USA, where Jerry Thomas' "Bartender's Guide" or Harry Johnson's "Bartender's Manual" reached a much larger audience. Well-preserved original editions are therefore to be considered true treasures. This new edition is a faithful reconstruction of the original.
