The young family struggled to survive in a strange new land. Jacob's dogged determination, his tailoring skills' and his hard work culminate in a realization of the American Dream. The business he founds provides the means for the family's upward mobility in the class conscious Jewish community of Baltimore. It also allows young David to meet a young, redheaded, Catholic sprite, Ruth Braddock, at summer camp. The resulting affair creates immense strain within the strictly orthodox Jewish Weiss family and the equally dedicated Catholic Braddock family. The resulting religious turmoil is abruptly interrupted by Pearl Harbor as the twins enlist in the Army Air Force. They both wind up as B-24 bomber pilots. Book Two - David is selected to participate in "The Halvorsen Project" where he ultimately takes part in the disastrous "Black Sunday" raid of August 1, 1943 on the Ploesti, Romania oil fields. The resulting chaotic air battle finds David fighting to keep "Baltimore Babe" aloft and get his heavily damaged plane back to base in Benghazi, Libya
