Synopsis
In Search of Aldus Lilly Scott Long lived a charmed life. Born to parents who taught classical languages so before the end of high school Lilly read Latin and Greek. A summer in Florence after high school was followed by other stays in Venice and Rome—places that were a perfect breeding ground for a classical scholar and they planted the seeds that grew from a dissertation to a book on the history and influence of the Aldine press on the cultural history of Europe. In Search of Aldus takes place in New York City at a Sotheby auction of the books of Italian Renaissance printers, primarily the works of the Aldine press. During the auction Lilly reminiscences about her loves, her marriages, her daughter, and about her years of book collecting. Lilly Scott Long is in her mid 50’s and happy in her second marriage, this to a wealthy, much older American, who supports her desire to assemble the significant Aldine press collection in private hands. This day is the culmination of a life’s mission when the most important and rare of Aldine’s classical texts—the1501 octavo edition of the poems of Vergil—will be auctioned.
