The 1936 tour was to take place at a time when the face of Europe was changing dramatically. The initial itinerary for the tour once agreed had to be drastically altered following the death of King George. Hitler in Germany, Mussolini in Italy and General Franco in Spain were all intent on expanding their control and influence. The clouds of war were gathering as the players sailed away to Australia hence the books title. Little did they or anyone else know it would be the last tour by the Rugby League for ten long years. The tour proved to be a great success on and off the field as once again the Ashes were to be retained. Also the tour would see for the very first time the players remain undefeated in Queensland. All of this in spite of the worst injury crisis that any tour party up to that time had endured. At one time just two weeks out from the Test match the injury list had twelve names on it. There was yet another first for the tourists when for the very first time up in Townsville the tour game was cancelled due to bad weather. The tour made a record profit and the players also received record rewards for their long endeavours. The book covers the events of the tour both on and off the field and will be of great interest to rugby league fans, historians, statisticians etc. It is the last book in a series that has dealt with all the tours to Australia and New Zealand that took place between World War 1 and World War 2. The intention has been to bring back into the public domain the exploits of those players now long forgotten except for their present day relations. It is hoped that the reader will appreciate their efforts as we should never forget that all who drink from the well should give thanks to those that dug it.
