Synopsis

This book is a pleasant-to-read piece of work, but it is not funny, for there is nothing funny about overweight! Please take a few seconds to think about these two facts: First: Thanks to recent evidence for the many benefits brought about by fasting, it is here to stay in our life, just like the wheel did centuries ago and internet in the last decades. It is not a dieting fad. Please notice that ‘fasting’ does not mean ‘starving’, not even going hungry. Second: the risks for ill health due to overweight are real, not fairy tales. If reading this, you are likely to be overweight; so, I will simply ask you two questions: a) Are you a masochist? b) Do you consider yourself a sane person? Likely you answered "no" to the first and "yes" to the second, so, take notice: If you are overweight, there is an inherent contradiction between being a normal, sane person and thinking "I am fine", because you are not "fine", as you think. To ‘feel fine’ is not the same as ‘being fine’. My diagnosis is that you suffer from resistance to change, like millions of people do. About the author: A medical graduate (Universidad Central de Venezuela) and Ph.D. (University College Medical School, London University U.K.), Professor of Biochemistry. He final job was Director of the Instituto de Medicina Experimental, Faculty of Medicine, UCV. He is now retired. Most people with overweight know it is a life-shortening condition; many are unhappy with their looks because of it; a sizeable percentage of humanity does not enjoy sex fully because of it, etc. Yet few people take the necessary steps to overcome this hurdle to well-being. Why? The reason is that they are trapped in a subtle mesh of bad habits. This is where this book steps in. The author holds the obvious: that we must correct overweight through knowledge of the causes. Please read on. Resisting change? Do not worry too much. It is normal behavior. The vast majority of people justify their bad habits. Any permanent change is VERY DIFFICULT. Our brain´s imprinted commands rule supreme. Now, let's look at the problem from a different, more benevolent and positive point of view. Think about the goals and not the means to get there. The goals are health, good figure, people who find you attractive, etc. Since there must be caloric restriction in the intake of food and beverages, a simple key is needed to solving the problem posed by this change: it should not be very big. The bigger it is, the harder it is to persevere. This is the answer: stay firm for two, better three, weeks (As explained in the book) and you will be on track to achieve a normal weight without excessive sacrifices. We give you the necessary knowledge. After all, that is what ‘Friendly Fasting’ was written for. In not many words this little book gives you the digest of scientific evidence that you probably have read in a scattered way in various sources like newspapers and the like. Now you will see them coherently as a body of knowledge. The central idea is that since your weight gain was a gradual, slow process, it should be reversed in the same way. If now you feel motivated, once you have read the book you will design your personal regimen for both diet and behavioral small changes. Take notice that it is known that a significant caloric restriction triggers the bodily mechanisms for keeping mass. In Friendly Fasting, Dr. Carlos A. Gonzalez postulates that if caloric restriction is mild and is done through Intermittent Fasting, that bodily response will not happen and body mass gradually will decrease. This book is essential reading for those who want to lose weight consciously. It is based on scientific facts, not myths.
