Lederer is a professor of engineering, specializing in steel processing. He and his son-in-law develop and market an advanced control system. Lederer receives an invitation to a steel mill in Moscow to discuss the implementation of his software. During a lavish dinner his hosts reveal themselves as terrorists. They demand his help in adapting his control software for missiles and when he hesitates his life is threatened. He escapes with the help of one of his former co-workers but on arrival in Toronto he is arrested and charged. In his trial the Judge is highly biased and he allows a number of questionable events. The most unfair and prejudicial one to Lederer is when a witness is allowed to testify on a video, with his back to the camera. When the jury is leaning toward acquittal, the judge ends the court case with a directed verdict, “Lederer is guilty”.
