Synopsis

The audience for this book is literacy educators. Our goal is to provide how and why, instructional programming ideas, many common and universal, that were modified and developed as Bookmates grew. The programs we describe may serve as models for new programs that other groups may wish to implement or provide insight into modifying or augmenting their existing ones. Our initial effort was to close the gap between the “have” and “have not” preschoolers at school entry. If you want to educate the child, you need to educate the parent. As we continued, we realized that we were educating parents and communities as well. Family literacy programs become stepping stones for parents and other community members to further their education, generating a cycle of opportunity for all. The intended audience is professors or instructors in early childhood education programs, both in Faculties of Education and in Community Colleges. Their students will be able to learn about teaching techniques for use in their own careers. Other audiences include staff in child care centers and in schools that wish to develop programs in order to reach out to their parents. The objective is to enhance connections with their communities, especially the parents of beginners and struggling readers. Others include those who offer literacy programs in adult literacy and English as an additional language. As we have evolved, we have gained more insight into family literacy fundamentals and discovered the importance of community involvement as integral to both program development and program delivery. Parents and community leaders from a variety of backgrounds are invited to provide input as programs are being developed. Also we have collaborated with other community workers, specifically health professionals who emphasize healthy living. Proceeds for the sale of this book will support Bookmates which is a non-profit organization. The table of contents follows.
