Synopsis
One million years ago, a people now called Homo erectus lived in East Africa on the slopes of the developing volcano Mt Killimanjaro. They were organized in hunting/gathering bands based on families, and they lived in the open without clothing or protection. Theirs was a life of feast and famine with constant danger from each other, animals, and the elements. One such band was led by Rod Boulder and included his two teenaged daughters Climbing Vine and Cooing Dove, and his lame son Little Turtle, who was unusually creative, knapping sophisticated tools from stone and inventing words. There were also Red Boulder's wife, his infant son Little Bit, his two brothers, and the brothers' nuclear families. The neighboring band was a very large one led by elephant Bull, a massive sadistic, greedy troublemaker, ho terrorized all the bands living around the mountain with his aggressiveness. He aspired to add Climbing Vine and Cooing Dover to his harem. Knowing how he treated his women, they rejected his advances, but he kidnapped them and brutalized them, producing babies by each. Both babies died, one killed by Elephant Bull and the other of hypothermia in trying to hide from him. The sisters escaped back to Red Boulder's family, but in addition to Elephant Bull's attempts to recapture them, their mother Shining Cloud in her idea of obedience to overriding ancient Custom, tried to drive them back to him. The Earth was shaking repeatedly, and Shining Cloud interpreted the earthquakes as Nature's way of telling the sisters that they should return to Elephant Bull. he girls fled into the forest and wandered about for a time, hiding from everyone, living on fruit, tubers, grubs, and worms, until they discovered a strange new powerful and frightening phenomenon. Cooing Dove was terrified, but Climbing Vine was mysteriously drawn to it, feeling strangely a part of it. She was unable to stay away from it, watching, learning, and seeking to understand. The fugitives mad friends with the "Not People", who called themselves Fish or River People, living along the River Panjani and taking their sustenance from it in the form of fish. The River People had a different way of life, but they were friendly, unlike the evil picture that the girls had been given of them. They welcomed the fugitives, and, for a time, the girls lived among them. But they eventually returned to Red Boulder's band out of loyalty. Elephant Bull made another attempt to abduct them, leading to a climactic clash with unexpected results. This novel contains barnyard behavior. Homo erectus had a long way to go to reach Victorian ideas of politeness and nicety. There is also great violence. Barnyard terms have been avoided, but some degree of explicitness is necessary to the plot. It should be rated R if not X.,
