In this book we will meet several of Lincoln’s opponents and even a few good friends who stood against him at key moments in his life. How he dealt them will illuminate his unique talent for handling personal conflicts. Lincoln rarely acknowledged any anger over personal insults his rivals would hurl his way, and never directed any back toward them. He always couched their opposing views in terms of an honest disagreement, and sought to find common ground with them whenever possible. In Lincoln’s time political rivalries often went further than a heated verbal exchange. Fistfights often broke out in the crowds gathered at political rallies, with the politicians on the stage plunging right into the fray. When Stephen Douglas finished speaking at an event near Springfield, Illinois and came down off the stage, his opponent for Congress, John T. Stuart, grabbed him in a bear hug and tried to toss him into the crowd. Douglas, the much smaller of the two men, clamped his teeth on Stuart’s hand and bit him so badly that he almost severed Stuart’s thumb. When some of Lincoln’s closest allies deserted him during tough campaigns for Congress and the U. S. Senate, he chose not to let his disappointment destroy their friendship. A friend once confronted Lincoln, angered that Lincoln did not go after his opponents with the same bitter intensity that they directed at him. He simply replied, “Do I not destroy my enemies when I make friends of them?”
