Imagine if you had the power to enforce on the world the way you expected society to be in a Utopian ideal. In Day One we live through a moral power shift, where an enigmatic entity imposes its will and we experience it through the life of Daniel, a young man who starts to see the world around him in much the same way as this mysterious benefactor. Even though he’s a part of the technical organisation Daniel would never describe himself as politically aware, seeing it as a kind of scientific discipline he doesn’t understand, but comes to realise that this is an illusion where the stewards of our information are essentially rats in charge of the cheese. The lives of those around him take on a more significant relevance, being various factions in a web of deceit as this strange being unravels the threads and sheds light on a dark, sinister oligarchy. For the vast majority of us we’re born into a world that, largely we don’t understand. Why do we need to know why the sky is blue or objects fall down and not up? We leave that to the ‘experts’ and although on rare occasions we may gain an insight into various elements of this strange environment, we leave that as an arena for academia to organise and control. We might think we see the society we live in through different perspectives, but all of us have the same aspirations and expectations. In a media savvy world how much should we believe and who should we believe it from?
