Synopsis

The novella is loosely based on how the South African priest Folani and the Swiss nurse Althea meet in an alternate Rome in the late 1960s. Their fledgeling romance plays out against a strange version of the Italian metropole beset by a pandemic of rats and struggling with an intransigent Icelandic Popess. The protagonists are embroiled on many fronts: fighting the pandemic, beginnings of a romance, sorting out comrades from enemies and fighting the good fight in Southern Angola. The novella combines romance, philosophy, set pieces of action and social critique. An awful mess.
