Synopsis

Ruth has embarked on a journey. Leaving her home in New Orleans behind her, she has joined a company of performers and entertainers as they begin their annual journey through the county fair circuit of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. She has few skills that will help her in this life and must pay her way by whatever means she can. She learns that life outside the cities is harder but that it contains many compensations as she starts to appreciate the simple pleasures of a hot shower and a good meal. As they travel Ruth finds more in common with her fellow-travellers than she ever expected. She bickers often with the woman whose wagon she shares while also trying to seduce the man she lives with. She receives strange words of advice from a blind tarot-card reader. Finally she discovers that the road contains many dangers that threaten the survival of those travellers, chief among them the marauders from the barren lands who bring death and destruction with them as they search for plunder.
