The first step towards the understanding of climate change by non-specialists is the knowledge of the thermal properties of the Earth's surface, of what the temperature is in the different geographical regions and how it changes naturally over time. In the absence of this piece of knowledge, we will tend to confuse the origin of climatic phenomena, failing to distinguish those natural and characteristic of the Earth from those resulting from global warming, and will mistakenly risk reading any atmospheric phenomenon with the only interpretation of climate change. With a deliberately informative language, the properties of solar irradiation, the consequent heating and the distribution of temperature on the Earth's surface are presented, deduced from the analysis of satellite data. Furthermore the characteristics of the daily, inter-daily and seasonal variability of the temperature are discussed, and how they change with the geographical coordinates.
