Synopsis
Set in London in 2017, ‘On the Edge’ is a crime thriller which rattles along at a good even pace. When Max Dearden discovers that his sister, Helena Colby, has gone missing, then alarm bells start to ring, and a tale of deceit and murder begins. Deardon seeks a meeting with his brother-in-law, Ralph Colby. Colby is a highly successful orthodontist with a practice on Harley Street. Colby tells him he has no idea where his wife has gone, but it isn’t the first time she has left him. Deardon thinks maybe Colby isn’t telling him the truth but has no way of knowing for sure. He is determined to find Helena. He contacts the police and tells them of his worries for his sister’s safety, but the police don’t share his concern. Nevertheless, they agree to interview Colby. Colby provides the police with a plausible reason why his wife has gone. She has left him for another man. With no evidence of foul-play the police say they will not be investigating further.Deardon asks a work colleague for advice and is advised to employ a private detective to help him find Helena. He hires a private-eye called Steve Chilton. Chilton soon comes back to Deardon and reveals that Ralph Colby may be involved with some criminals, but that he has drawn a blank trying to trace Helena. Deardon is stunned that Colby may be involved with some criminal types. Chilton suggests to Deardon that he considers using a psychic, called Ingrid Prescott, to help to find his sister. Deardon is at first dismissive of the idea but goes along with it. When Ingrid Prescott has a premonition that several murders have taken place in Ralph Colby’s home then Deardon’s need to find out what has become of his sister intensifies. In a sudden about turn Helena is discovered to be safe and well. But then Deardon seeks a meeting with Colby in his home and presses him to explain what is going on. In doing so he inadvertently leads himself into a very dangerous situation and places his own life on the edge.
