“My enterprise stands ready for your every inquisitorial need: warnings off, followings, seekings out, recoveries, disputations resolved and extrications of divers kinds. Abuse of affections a speciality. Discretion is yoked to efficiency, outlays tailored to means—”
Three years have elapsed since Sebastian, called Treadsoft, plying his suspect trade of Privy Inquisitor in a feudal English town, concluded the affair of the Maltese Flagon, key to a lost Templar treasure. Opposed by the city’s underworld gangs, Scottish rebels, French agents, a revival of the Templars, and not the least, the sinister knight Flasingham and his lover Ingardde, he managed to elude their attacks. With the map to the treasure secure in his possession, Sebastian postponed attempts to seek the reward in the heart Europe, for the Hundred Years War is in its early stages. He wanted no part of war, having sworn a solemn oath to nevermore go for a soldier.
How then does he come to be on the pitching deck of an English warship mounting an attack against the combined fleets of France, Spain and Genoa?
As the English armies assemble to invade France a tournament is decreed. A participant, the Earl of Balstrod, asks Treadsoft to investigate murders by a soldier in his retinue. Though Treadsoft is distracted by his new friend Jenne, a lady of Queen Philippa’s court, he agrees. When the killer abducts her, Treadsoft comes to the rescue, helped by Balstrod’s man Boggart. After falling out with his underworld banker Sullivan, he impulsively decides to take passage on one of the ships ferrying the court and the army to Flanders. The war’s initial battle is a bloody defeat for the French-led alliance at the port of Sluys but as the battle concludes a Genoese galley captures Treadsoft’s ship. The galley’s captain finds out about Treadsoft’s unique trade and forces him to accept a dangerous mission ashore. He learns that a court lady died in the sea battle and fears that it might have been Jenne.
Treadsoft begins his sojourn on the continent with but three goals: to escape the Genoese compulsion, to gain access to the court to discover Jenne’s fate, and to travel into the truculent Swiss Confederacy to search for the supposed Templar hoard. Will the contending factions in the shifting alliances of war-ravaged Europe—French defenders or Flemish usurpers or English invaders—remain unaware and uninvolved?
