TEACHING IS SOMETIMES LIKE THIS is a collection of short stories from the author’s twenty-seven year teaching experience. Each story ends with an Essential Learning giving insight and practical advice that can be of benefit to new and veteran teachers. These stories contain day-to-day details of teaching that aren't normally dealt with in teacher preparation programs. This book is a way of familiarizing beginning education majors with the classroom: unexpected things that can and do pop up, the joys, the tears, the satisfactions, the frustrations of teaching. Because, after all, teaching isn’t simply delivering carefully drafted lesson plans – there is so much more. And, sometimes those extras necessarily become the main feature of the day. Veteran teachers can enjoy this book; they will find themselves smiling and nodding their heads as they identify with the incidents related.Collectively, the stories remind us all of the importance of looking to Jesus for courage, wisdom, insights, energy, and empathy to meet the needs of His precious children in our care.

Mary Ann Walden, BS, had a thirty-three year teaching career that included twenty-seven years in various multi-grade combinations from PreK to tenth grade. Eleven of those years were in one-room schools – yup, teaching all eight grades at once! She refers to these situations as “mental whiplash all day long – but, oh, the memories!” Her experiences included starting up a new one-room school and building it up to become a two-teacher school. The last six years of her career were spent as Education Department Chair at Ouachita Hills College in Amity, AR training future Christian teachers. Since retiring, Mary Ann and her husband have moved to the beautiful mountains of southwestern Virginia where she spends her time writing, sewing, walking (with a boat horn in hand just in case she meets with a bear), cooking, and being active in her local church.
