A CANNON BOOKS Mystery & Detective Collection * Gentlemen Thieves: Simon Carne, A. J. Raffles, Arsene Lupin- STORIES BY: GUY BOOTHBY · E. W. HORNUNG · MAURICE LEBLANC* (402 PAGES): -- This Cannon Books volume collects TWENTY-SIX adventures involving the exploits of three gentlemen thieves: Raffles, Carne and Lupin. * * * A. J. Raffles, gentleman thief and cricket player extraordinaire, was a character created in the late 1890s by E. W. Hornung (1866 – 1921), brother-in-law to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 – 1930), creator of Sherlock Holmes. At first Doyle encouraged Hornung to run with Raffles as a series. However, he later regretted his prompting, believing that the Raffles stories inappropriately glamorized a criminal. Before Raffles, there was Guy Boothby’s (1867 – 1905) Simon Carne. The charming swindler, Carne, was first published in 1897 in Pearson’s Magazine - two years before the appearance of Raffles. Arsène Lupin is an extremely popular character in French literature. This gentleman thief was created by Maurice Leblanc (1864 – 1941). Lupin first appeared in serial format in July 1905 in the magazine Je sais tout. Many years later, Lupin’s grand kid, Lupin the III (not a Leblanc creation), was the subject of Hayao Miyazaki’s anime film The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) GENTLEMEN THIEVES: SIMON CARNE (by: Guy Boothby): A Criminal in Disguise; The Den of Iniquity; The Duchess of Wiltshire’s; Diamonds; A Service to the State; An Imperial Finale * A.
