Synopsis

Professor Oscar Newman, the much-maligned “King of Contraception,” ironically wants just one thing in life—a child of his own. And with seven billion people already roaming the planet, why should that prove so bloody difficult? It all starts with his ill-fated prenuptial pilgrimage to the so-called “cradle of humankind,” the Great Rift Valley of East Africa. What better place to find some guidance, some inspiration to help a prospective parent who never knew his own father discover how to serve as a proper trustee of his own genetic endowment? So Oscar follows the shadows of our ancient ancestors across the Serengeti, to Olduvai Gorge and beyond, until he indeed finds the enlightenment he is seeking. But that’s not all he finds. He and his traveling companion stumble upon a secret so dark and deep it must never know the light of day. And it’s a secret that may very well get Oscar killed, if he hasn’t already been convicted of murder. Set in the wilds of southern Kenya, home to the Maasai tribe, the story unfolds as thousands of refugees from Uganda spill into Maasailand, further complicating the lives of those caught in the middle, especially Oscar Newman, whose only desire is to get back to his beloved fiancée in Scotland. But he is relentlessly hunted for the knowledge he bears—and must never share—in this adventuresome and eco-thrilling love story.
