Synopsis

From the first shot fired at the Battle of Fort Sumter, to the last man standing at the Battle of Palmito Ranch, the American Civil War raged on between Americans who were fighting neighbors for what they believed was an important cause. It’s estimated that over 618,000 Americans died during the Civil War which lasted from April 12, 1861, with the Confederate bombardment on Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, to Robert E. Lee’s surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. The American death toll surpassed any accumulated American casualties from the American Revolution to the Vietnam Conflict. The Union Army was near twice the size of the Confederate Army. Union soldiers numbered 2,100,000. Confederate soldiers totaled 1,064,000. Of those deaths during the war, more than 400,000 people died from disease related to poor surgical techniques, poor health, and influenza. More than 9 million people lived in the Southern states during the Civil War, and more than 3.4 million of those people were slaves. Slave owners were fewer in numbers than most people realize. Only 1 out of 4 farms had slaves. Only wealthy Southerners owned slaves. Most Confederate soldiers were between 18 and 30 years old. Much of the strength and actual statistics about the Confederates is lost to history due to missing records and fire. This is a collection of fifty facts about the American Civil War
