1950s Alaska! What would it be like? Discover the answer that a young, twenty-one year old Carol, her husband Rod, and their fifteen month-old son, Hal, encounter in fascinating glimpses of an adventurous life on their homestead in the wilderness. Funny and sad, harrowing and heartwarming, this lively memoir brings to life the everyday challenges of a modern pioneer living without electricity or running water. Meet friends and neighbors, and laugh at outlandish escapades of this self-proclaimed "transplanted city girl." Informative and often witty, Carol sketches word-pictures of a ruggedly beautiful but harsh land where the williwaw winds blow, and its inhabitants.

A native of Los Angeles, California, Carol was born only days before the onset of the Great Depression. Following graduation from high school this city girl married Rod, her best friend's older brother, and they moved to a ranch in Lancaster, California. Their son, Hal was born two years later. The following year, lured by glowing letters describing Alaska's spectacular scenery and unlimited opportunities, the couple joined Rod's father and homesteaded on the Kenai Peninsula. Their daughter,Vicki, was born in Seward. Later on, they were divorced. Now married to Don for fifty-plus years, she enjoys the lifestyle of a senior retirement community in Prescott, Arizona. Their blended family of four adult children also includes grandchildren and great-grands. Early in their marriage they were invited by Don's parents to accompany them on trips to Europe, Israel and on cruises. Fond memories were forged, cemented by shared sights and experiences. This fostered a love of travel which later included annual visits to their timeshare on Maui. Carol worked as a Licensed Vocation Nurse in the ICU. Later she held secretarial positions at: Forest Home Christian Conference Center, a neurosurgeon's office, Crafton Hills College, and lastly atRedlands Community Hospital. 1994 marked their move to Lake Montezuma, located in central Arizona's Verde Valley. Their retirement years offered volunteer opportunities--important to both Rotta's. They received training and served for eight years as volunteer patrol deputies with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. Following that they volunteered with the Yavapai County Attorney's Office in the Victim/Witness Program. Their many years volunteering with the Operation Christmas Child outreach remains a priority for the couple. Carol's hobbies include knitting, embroidery, and gardening--an activity reaching from days on the homestead. And from an early age, a passionate love of reading. A more recent pursuit--memoir writing--an activity offered at the senior community where they moved in 2014. With a desire to leave a legacy to her family, Carol wrote of her life in Alaska. The stories captivated others in the group and they urged her to compile them into a book. Other life stories are being written for the enjoyment of family. As evangelical Christians, serving and being an integral part of their church family has always been foremost in both Carol's and Don's lives and continues to be their foundation for living.
