Synopsis

In Turning to God from Idols, Gregory L. Madison presents a comprehensive, Bible-centered approach to understanding addiction that challenges many of today's assumptions. Drawing from Scripture, personal experience, and years of biblical study, he argues that addiction is fundamentally an issue of idolatry—a worship problem in which something created takes the place of the Creator.

After spending twenty-three years enslaved to crack cocaine and participating in numerous Christian and secular recovery programs, Madison discovered that lasting freedom required far more than behavior modification. True sobriety begins when a person turns from idols and turns wholeheartedly to the living God.

Rather than merely asking, "How do I stop using?" this book asks deeper questions:

  • Why do we worship created things instead of God?
  • What does the Bible actually say about addiction?
  • Why is reverence for God essential to lasting freedom?
  • What is genuine repentance?
  • How does joy in Christ replace the false promises of addiction?

Organized into three transformative phases—Reason, Repent, and Rejoice—this book helps readers build a biblical foundation for lasting change. It explores the reality of addiction, the deceitfulness of the human heart, the necessity of conviction and repentance, and the joy found in knowing and serving Jesus Christ.

Throughout the book, readers will discover:

• A biblical definition of addiction as idolatry.
• Why lasting sobriety begins with a right view of God.
• The relationship between reverence, repentance, and freedom.
• Practical biblical principles for overcoming life-dominating sins.
• Hundreds of Scripture references for personal study.
• Appendices covering idolatry, sobriety, the fear of the Lord, support groups, and additional biblical resources.

This book is not merely about becoming clean—it is about becoming Christlike. Its goal is not simply recovery but transformation through the power of the gospel. Whether you struggle with drugs, alcohol, pornography, gambling, food, materialism, or any other controlling desire, the Bible reveals that there is hope in Jesus Christ.

If you are looking for a recovery plan that goes beyond temporary abstinence and points you toward a deeper relationship with God, Turning to God from Idols offers a biblical path to genuine freedom, lasting joy, and a life lived for the glory of God.
