This book uses the “look & find” game to give kids a fun way to practice phonemic and sound awareness. Each page contains 16 images. There are between 5 and 7 images that contain the Starting Sound associated with the alphabet letter on that page. For example, on the “A” page, the child must find ANT, ALLIGATOR, AVOCADO, AX & APPLE. Each of the images is repeated on some of the following pages to reinforce the correspondence between sounds and letters.
Once the child can easily find the pictures for the primary sound for each alphabet letter, parents can go back through the book and ask the child to find the “A”, “B”, “C”, etc. words on every page. More advanced kids might be able to identify the target sound when it doesn’t start the word. For example, when you ask your child to find the “T” sound throughout the book, they might also identify “kitten” as a word with this sound. That’s GREAT!
One way I have used pictures like this to reinforce both the game aspect and the phonetic lessons is to help the child make up a SENTENCE that uses all of the words with the common starting sound. For example, “The Ant and his friend the Alligator used an Ax to cut an Avocado and an Apple.” Sentences like this form mnemonics to help remember the correspondence of “Ant” to “A”. Try it! The next time you ask the child which pictures have the “A” sound, they may repeat the story as a way to remember the correct pictures!
This book is part of my series, Fun Alphabet Books, which provide fun ways to practice phonetic awareness, handwriting, and coloring.
