Set in Germany in the turbulent 1970s, this novella recounts the exciting adventures of expatriate New Zealanders Marcus Flack and his wife Ann Marie who get drawn into a hashish smuggling ring, making runs to Holland and back. Their old friend Art Atwood turns up from their past and proceeds to have a breakdown while their own relationship goes into free fall. The results are hilarious, trippy, scary and edgy. Johnson writes with his tongue in his cheek and a sharp, satirical eye. The Dope Runners is a comedy with a twist of lemon.
