Synopsis

In the prequel to this story, The Sun Sets In Smyrna: 1922, Vicki, a young bride-to-be living in Toronto, Canada, finds a diary that her paternal grandmother (Celia Alexiou) had written. The diary had fallen into the hands of Vicki’s father, and Vicki decides to read the few excerpts her yiayia (grandmother) had written. From the pages of this diary, Vicki learns about the events leading up to the evacuation of Smyrna in 1922, a period she has heard about from her family and a Greek friend, but her knowledge of the subject is limited. The reader, however, learns more than what was written in the diary … We see that Celia and her family are awoken by soldiers and forced to leave their home. Horrified, Celia, her younger sister, Maria, and their mother, Angela, helplessly watch the soldiers beat and take Celia’s father, Simo, and her brother, Mihali. The Alexiou women head to the Quay, where many have gathered, trying to escape the approaching enemy army and fires spreading across the city. But as they head for the waterfront, Celia bumps into Voula, a pregnant woman, causing her to fall. An old gentleman who witnesses the scene tells the women that an American, Mr. Jonathan Lattimore, has turned a building into a safehouse on the Quay, and that he is offering refuge to injured and pregnant women, and orphans, as well. Celia decides to temporarily separate from her family to help Voula. Celia tells her family she’ll meet them on the Quay once she gets Voula to the safehouse. The rest of the story that unfolds in Book One of this series focuses on Celia’s efforts to help those trying to escape the approaching enemy and the fiery inferno ignited in its wake, and it examines her hopes of reuniting with what remains of her family.

Book Two picks up Celia’s story in the safehouse and shows the remarkable courage she demonstrates in her heartbreaking efforts to reunite with her family. Celia’s story is emblematic of the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit and the many-faceted aspects of our love for one another, and for humanity. How many “Celias” has our world seen over the thousands of years our species has roamed the planet? How many more must be traumatized or sacrificed before we put an end to the cruel extermination of people whose only crime was to be quietly living their lives in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Her first book, The Sun Sets in Smyrna 1922, is a testament to the struggles of those before us… ALL of those before us. Her second book, And The Sun Will Rise continues a remarkable tale of hardship, brutality and survival based in part of the historical 1922 burning of Smyrna. Bess’s objective is to acknowledge their journeys and their outcomes, and what it means for generations to come.

The Sun Will Rise is the gripping sequel to the author’s first book about an event that left shadows in people’s hearts for decades: the 1922 burning of Smyrna. Picking up where the first book left off, the author weaves a heartbreaking tale of the terror of war and its impact on the lives of ordinary people… the deep well of courage survival requires. The second book is every bit as compelling as the first… readers will be on the edge of their seats as Celia shows again how challenging it can be to embrace grace under fire…a powerful book by a gifted writer.”

“Bess Georgakakos offers a captivating sequel novel taking us deeper into a time of brutality, rape and oppression. Based on her grandmother's real life experiences during the 1922 burning of Smyrna, the author vividly continues her enthralling tale of Celia overcoming the horrors of war... an absolute must-read…”
