Synopsis

All over the western world, Black History Month has become the ‘official’ vehicle through which the stories of people of African descent are told in those societies. BHM is a laudable idea and has gone someway in addressing the place and contribution of ‘black’ people to life in the country. Yet, it is not difficult to also note that in recent years, the composition of black people has varied and enlarged to include numerous African nationalities and immigrant groups. These groups – be they Nigerians, Ghanaians, Kenyans – do not accept the ‘black’ label of cultural anonymity and conformity that the term connotes and prescribes. The presence of unique languages and cultural emblems with clear distinction means that Black History Month falls short of being an authentic edification of African heritage and achievement. The aim of this book is to focus on the uniqueness of the African man, woman and child in the context of their real origins, the narrative of their arrival in today’s diaspora community. It draws attention to the importance of cultural geography, language and sociology and celebrates the history of the ‘native societies’ labelled derogatively by the colonists of old. 'Its Yoruba Heritage' wants Africa’s children to be aware of and be proud of their ancestors. It encourages them to be wise to question the media misrepresentation of Africa and Africa’s people. As the Yoruba adage goes, ‘Odo to ba gbagbe orisun e, gbigbe lo ma gbe’ - A river that forgets its source will dry up - I hope that this first of Heritage stories and workbook, parents, guardians, teachers and young people will have the opportunity to see beyond Black History Month and connect to something much deeper, more stirring, more rewarding.
