Willy Ronis (1910-2009) est une figure majeure de la photographie humaniste française aux côtés d'Édouard Boubat et de Robert Doisneau. Se destinant à la musique, il doit cependant aider son père à tenir son studio photo et se forme ainsi aux techniques du tirage. À la mort de celui-ci, il décide de se consacrer aux reportages photographiques, au sein de l'agence Rapho (où il entre en 1946), ainsi qu'à la " chasse aux images " au gré de ses voyages, dans le monde, en France et à Paris.

Parisian-born Ronis bought his first Rolleiflex camera in 1937 at the age of 27. He trained his camera on the working class neighborhoods of Belleville and Ménilmontant, and strolled the streets of his beloved city, capturing the essence of everyday life in Paris. He memoralized the urban landscape?a lamp-lit bridge or the leafy horse chestnut trees that border the Seine?and typical Parisians?in the metro, sunbathing on the Ile de la Cité, ice skating in the park.
