Architecte avant d'être designer, Gaetano Pesce (1939-1924) réalisa en 1994 l'un des projets architecturaux les plus marquants de la décennie en réponse à une commande de Jay Chiat. Directeur de Chiat\DAy, l'agence de communication la plus en vogue de New York et Los Angeles, il est inspiré par l'appartement novateur et empreint d'une liberté totale réalisé par le mastro italien pour Ruth Shuman. Jay Chiat souhaite "un bureau virtuel, sans horaires, sans cloisons, sans papier, sans poste attitré, entièrement digital". Avant l'ère du tout numérique, le 180 Maiden Lane se mue en terrain de jeu et d'expérimentation. Le mobilier et le bâti se couvrent de résine, matériau dont Gaetano Pesce est le spécialiste, car "il permet la joie, la découverte, la stimulation, en accord avec les caractéristiques du corps humain : la souplesse, la transparence, la joie, la couleur". L'ensemble est pensé comme un village fait de ruelles, selon les linéaments d'un visage, et articulé autour de différentes zones : cafétéria, salles de réunion, salle vidéo, ainsi qu'une dizaine d'espaces réservés aux principaux clients de l'agence.
