The Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP), invented by René Moineau, isa great innovation for the whole industry, particularly in petroleumproduction. Since 1980, Progressing Cavity Pumps have been widelyused in the production of heavy oil well containing sand and gas.The aim of this new edition is to provide clear related and condensedinformation about the principles of the Progressing Cavity Pump, includingthe use of recent material technologies to manufacture pump stators,with advanced elastomers and now with metals. The same applies tothe drive rods and driving head, particularly with permanent magnetmotors and advanced control and well monitoring, with downholeand surface sensors to control and monitor the pumping system. Datatransmission and processing are improving well management andsafety. Software is used to select the best pump for the well candidate.All these new technologies are worldwide applied and accepted bythe market. Christian Wittrisch has been Programme Leader for downhole equipment since 1985 and hasbeen at IFP (now IFP Energies nouvelles) for 34 years. He holds a Master of Sciences in electronicsfrom Montpellier Science University. He joined Schlumberger Logging Services as a field loggingengineer, then IFP Energies nouvelles in Rueil Malmaison, France. His expertise is in downholeequipments, logging tools, pumps and horizontal well technologies. He is the author of severalpapers and more than 50 patents, particularly on downhole equipments, PCP and multiphasepumps, on horizontal well logging technologies such as SIMPHOR to perform logging in horizontalwells, and on hydraulic fracture mapping such as the SIMFRAC system. In 2011, he was honouredto receive the special French "Marius Lavet" inventor engineering prize.
