About the book >.>.> Un Defi au Gout discusses changing interest in Sèvres porcelain of the eighteenth century, in connection with a catalogue for an exhibition organised by Pierre Ennés. Its opening questions the claim that French people do not like this porcelain, suggesting instead that they may no longer appreciate it. The text asks why it has fallen out of favour, whether this is particular to France or more pronounced there than in Britain or the United States, and why it attracts less interest than sixteenth-century French furniture and drawings. The author does not claim to answer these questions, suggesting that changing fashion, rather than a profound shift in taste, may explain the decline. The Louvre?s possible role is also raised. Of the 61 pieces in the exhibition, few had entered national collections before 1914. Gifts and bequests made between the wars had not been enough to show the full variety and inventiveness of Sèvres porcelain or to emphasise the development of its forms and ambitions. (LL).
