A statute of limitation is an act of limiting the time within which an action must be brought. To further elaborate, we can say that for most actions, periods of limitation are prescribed by statutes, with the consequence that an action commenced after the period of limitation has expired is not maintainable. In short, statutes that impose periods of limitation for classes of actions are called statutes of limitation. In fact, the concept of limitation and lapse of time remained vogue in the legal framework throughout the history of the origin and development of the Islamic legal system. Three words have frequently been used in Islamic jurisprudence, namely Murur al-zaman, Tamadi, and Taqadum. One of the most important collections and codifications of Islamic law, Al-Majalla, includes a full chapter on the subject of limitation.
