Synopsis
Du Jour J, tout le monde connaît les parachutistes américains largués sur Sainte-Mère-Eglise, le bain de sang à Omaha Beach, la prise héroïque de la Pointe du Hoc ou encore le débarquement des 177 commandos français à Ouistreham.
On en oublie qu’au milieu de ce front il y a un secteur, Gold Beach, où l’offensive alliée s’est révélée particulièrement efficace, au point que les 25 000 Britanniques ayant pris pied sur les plages d’Asnelles et de Ver-sur-Mer auront atteint la plupart de leurs objectifs au soir du 6 juin, notamment le contrôle de l’axe Caen-Bayeux, et qu’ils auront libéré Bayeux dès le lendemain.
Mais Gold Beach, c’est aussi l’extraordinaire prouesse technologique que constituent la construction du port artificiel d’Arromanches et la transformation de Port-en-Bessin en port pétrolier pour ravitailler l’ensemble de l’armada alliée. Et c’est dans le secteur de Gold Beach que le sergent Stan Hallis a reçu en récompense de ses actes de bravoure la seule Victoria Cross (la plus prestigieuse des décorations britanniques) décernée en Normandie.
C’est pour toutes ces raisons que le gouvernement britannique a choisi Gold Beach, et plus précisément la commune de Ver-sur-Mer, pour édifier un Mémorial portant les noms des quelque 21 000 soldats du Royaume-Uni tués le D-Day ou durant la bataille de Normandie.
Il fallait donc un livre pour que Gold Beach retrouve enfin aux yeux de l’Histoire la place qui doit être la sienne parmi les cinq plages du Débarquement. Grâce à l’exceptionnelle documentation réunie depuis plus d’un demi-siècle par Philippe Bauduin, spécialiste reconnu du Jour J et natif de Ver-sur-Mer, cet ouvrage richement illustré, rappelle les enjeux de ce secteur clé du Jour J et relate les faits qui s’y sont déroulés, au plus près de ses acteurs.
Après le succès de Jour J, ce qu’on ne vous a pas dit, les secrets du Débarquement, publié en 2016, Philippe Bauduin et Jean-Charles Stasi poursuivent leur collaboration avec ce nouvel ouvrage consacré au 6 juin 1944.

It was for all these reasons that the British Government chose Gold Beach and in particular the village of Ver-sur-Mer to set up the Memorial bearing the names of some 21 000 United Kingdom soldiers killed on D-Day or during the Battle of Normandy.
